WHAT IS ADVISORY?

Advisory is a year-long class and often acts as a students’ Homeroom. This class meets Monday – Friday at the beginning of the day for 20 minutes. The main purpose of the class is to help students build relationships on a more individual and personal basis. It will include school-wide and team theme activities, such as IB-MYP and FISH!.

ECKER HILL INTERNATIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL
2009/2010 ADVISORY DAILY SCHEDULE

EVERYDAY: Attendance, the pledge, and announcements
Students can check in with individual teachers as needed. The daily schedule is subject to change based on team and school-wide activities.

MONDAY: DEAR - Drop Everything and Read
Every Monday all students and staff will DROP EVERYTHING AND READ! This means students & teachers can read silently, teachers can do read aloud with children’s books or excerpts from novels, newspapers, magazines, etc... The idea is that during this time, all people in your advisory are participating in some kind of reading.

TUESDAY: STUDY HALL/AGENDA CHECK
A time set aside for the students to get help from peers and their advisor. Students who do not need assistance may work on homework or read silently. We also would like to emphasize a school wide use of agendas. Advisors will double check with students and ensure that they are using their agendas. In addition, this is a time to do grade checks with students on Powerschool.

WEDNESDAY: TEAM Activity Day
It is up to each advisory “TEAM” to plan these activities. In addition, this is time TEAMs can use to promote any integrated units the team may be doing through all content areas.

THURSDAY: GAME Day
Time to “play” games ranging from indoor to outdoor games (Table games, team building games, noncompetitive/competitive) to establish rapport and promote social interactions.

FRIDAY: FISH! Friday
It’s a set of simple, interconnected principles that everyone can tailor to their own life and school - old wisdom for a new day. When you choose to incorporate these principles...•BE THERE •CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE •MAKE THEIR DAY • PLAY you’ll see a positive change in the relationships you create at school and at home. Every Friday will be activities to help promote the FISH! Philosophy school-wide.
